This repository lists references to species of interest to fisheries and aquaculture. It comes from the FAO's international ASFIS reference system. It is therefore possible to find species of fish, cephalopods, crustaceans, molluscs, etc. It does not list all the world's species, but the species exploited as well as the species impacted by the exploitation of the resource (marine mammals, birds, etc.). However, in Harmonie, it is extended to meet the needs of national statistics by integrating data that are not referenced in international reference systems (e.g. elver, yellow eel, silver eel).

The ASFIS list is updated once a year by the FAO and subsequently in Harmonie. The 3A code (unique 3-letter code), ISSCAAP/CSITAPA (species group identifier), TAXOCODE (10-digit taxonomic code used for classification) and hierarchy are also maintained in Harmonie. During the annual update, the references are checked against the Worms reference system for scientific species and against the Inventaire National du Patrimoine Naturel (INPN) for vernacular names. Modifications and additions are sent to the FAO by the repository manager.

For some species, conversion coefficients called live weight equivalents allow the weight of a live fish to be estimated from its weight after processing. In Harmonie, there is also a link with the scientific species repository to enable reporting and cross-referencing of data between the various collection actions. Furthermore, to limit data entry errors, commercial species can be regionalised according to sea areas or regions. Thus, a species observed only in the Mediterranean cannot be entered in French Guiana.
