Repository of Size-Weight Relationships (RTP)

Size-weight relationships are specific to each scientific species and its environment. They allow the size of an individual to be determined from its weight or vice versa. These relationships are established statistically from a sample of individuals representative of the species.

Statement

The relationship between the total length of an individual and its weight is generally exponential. It is represented by the relationship (Le Cren, 1951): P = a L b where P = weight in grams; L = length in cm; a and b are coefficients characteristic of the species, the period of observation, the place and sometimes the sex. These relationships are established statistically by experts and generally published in scientific journals.

In Harmonie, the a and b coefficients are recorded by species, by sex (if sexed) and by fishing area. The origin of the coefficient is traced as it may come from the literature or from Ifremer's internal work.

This reference system is updated on request, in consultation with the experts in biological parameters.
